dirt was crap (gravel) so I ditched the project. Will make one somewhere else some other time though

dig after rain when the dirt is wetter it will stick and compact better and be much stronger in the long run. compact the dirt as much as you can as you pile it up.

sounds like a good spot, build as much under the trees as you can, don't dig random holes everywhere, it looks bad, dig one hole somewhere out of the way and barrow the dirt where you need it. if drainage is good you could dig into the ground instead its quicker but it doesnt look as good imo, your choice really.
